| Jun 1 Ho-Chunk Nation Dugout Canoe Journey |
Wisconsin River Highlighted in 2026
Since 2022, the Ho-Chunk Nation has completed annual journeys in a hand-made dugout canoe along various waterways that traverse their ancestral tribal lands and other areas of historic significance. From June 1 through 5, 2026, members of the HCN plan to paddle a dugout canoe down various portions of the Wisconsin River, Kickapoo River, Yellow River and the Mississippi River that spans across the west central portions of the Ho-Chunk Nation’s ancestral lands.
This year's journey is slated to begin at Portage. The plan is for the canoe to be put in on the Portage Canal near our museum as it makes its way toward the Wisconsin River. The Fox-Wisconsin portage was a crucial crossroads for travel and trade for the Ho-Chunk Nation, as well as countless others, for centuries.
You are invited to come watch and learn on June 1, roughly around 8 a.m. Feel free to park in the visitor center lot. We hope you can join us in witnessing the start of this historic voyage.

Celebrate America's Semiquincentennial - 250 years of American History
Sunday June 7, Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters Historic Site in Portage will present “Becoming Wisconsin: A Revolutionary Path,” sharing pivotal moments and lives that shaped the state’s early history.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to move among five “stations” to hear stories of “Rivers and Lakes,” “Patriot Memorial Garden,” “A Fur Trader and His Family,” “The Arrival of Fort Winnebago” and “Frontier Life.” The stories will explore ties to America’s 250th anniversary.
Free tours of the log cabin and Garrison School, which recently underwent a flooring restoration, will be offered until 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available from the Screamin’ Zeman food truck.
Historical interpreters and presenters include Reed Perkins, Wisconsin historian, genealogist and author; Scott Dyer, a social studies instructor at Eleva-Strum High School in Trempeleau County; Ella Alreuter, a member of the WauBun Chapter, NSDAR; Paul Wolter, executive director of the Sauk County Historical Society; and Cliff Nieuwenhuis, a Revolutionary War re-enactor and historical interpreter.
“We are excited to host this event during our nation’s 250th year,” said Site Curator Mitzi Schwertfeger. “Although Fort Winnebago was not built until the early 19th century, its people and traditions have direct ties back to the American Revolution. This program will be fun and educational for the entire family. Please join us as we tell the stories of the men and women who made Wisconsin — and America.”
Located at 1824 State Road 33 in Portage, Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters Historic Site overlooks the point where Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette left the Fox River to portage to the Wisconsin River in 1673. It includes the Surgeons Quarters log cabin where U.S. Army surgeons resided from 1834-54 and the Garrison School, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1850. The cabin has been listed on the Register of Historic Places since 1970.
Owned by the Wisconsin Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters Historic Site is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday through mid-October.

You and your family are invited to work right alongside the archaeologists. Try your hand at a variety of tasks from digging to screening and more. Children ages 5 and up are welcomed to join in the fun with the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult.

You and your family are invited to work right alongside the archaeologists. Try your hand at a variety of tasks from digging to screening and more. Children ages 5 and up are welcomed to join in the fun with the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult.
A membership (individual or family) is required in order to participate. We strongly recommend that you purchase your membership ahead of time, although memberships may also be purchased on the days of the excavation. Bring your membership card to the event.

Garden Tractor Daze at the Columbia County Fairgrounds.
Featuring a Garden Tractor show with farm tractors, hit and miss engines, antique farm garden equipment, pedal pull for adults and kids, indoor flea market and farm toy show with an outside garden tractor swap meet.
Food on the grounds, tractor part vendors, music, garden tractor parade, plenty of room for large displays.
Allis Chalmers, and Simplicity built tractors will be our main feature this year. Also Wheel Horse Ralley of the Red, Case Demonstrator reunion, 60th Anniversary Gathering of the Case T-90. New this year Celebrating the Class of 1966......All tractor models made in 1966, and the Colt, Case, Ingersoll Collectors Convention.

| The Ford Edsels and members of the International Edsel Club are coming back to Portage in 2026! More details to come!!
A little history according to the IEC website: The Edsel was an automobile marque that was planned, developed, and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company for model years 1958-1960. With the Edsel, Ford had expected to make significant inroads into the market share of both General Motors and Chrysler and close the gap between itself and GM in the domestic American automotive market.
Ford invested heavily in a yearlong teaser campaign leading consumers to believe that the Edsel was the car of the future – an expectation it failed to deliver on. After it was unveiled to the public, it was considered to be unattractive, overpriced, and overhyped. The Edsel never gained popularity with contemporary American car buyers and sold poorly. The Ford Motor Company lost $250 million on Edsel's development, manufacturing, and marketing. The very word "Edsel" became a popular symbol of a commercial failure.

Come join us and participate in our Half Marathon and 5K that will be taking place during the Taste of Portage weekend. The course set up and timing is being coordinated by Race Day Events and our race is presented by Aspirus Health.

EVENT DETAILS: Taste of Portage Half Marathon will take you on a beautiful run through Portage, Wisconsin past several of our community parks and the paved Levee path on the Wisconsin River. We will have t-shirts (register by 8/3 to guarantee), medals, and a huge downtown post-race block party/awards ceremony!
Bring your whole family and enjoy the race as part of our annual Taste of Portage Market Fair in downtown for the weekend. Friday night packets can be picked up at the event and you can stay to enjoy some live music and food. After the race on Saturday, you and your family can enjoy the downtown party with live music, kid’s entertainment, a classic car show, sidewalk sales and specials in our businesses and of course lots of food and cold beverages to enjoy!
The Taste of Portage Half Marathon and 5K will start and finish in downtown Portage at the Columbia County Administration Building, located at 112 Edgewater Street, Portage, WI 53901. There will be plenty of parking here and portable bathrooms to use.

DOWNTOWN PORTAGE HOLIDAY PARADE & TREE LIGHTING
The Downtown Portage Business Improvement District is excited to be hosting the Holiday Parade! We invite you to join us and participate in the parade on Friday, November 27, 2026.
The route is entirely on Cook Street (Hwy 33). It starts at the corner of MacFarlane Road and Cook Street in front of St. Mary Church. It will proceed east down Cook Street to the Market Square parking lot where it will end. The Tree Lighting with Santa Claus will follow at Commerce Plaza.
All area schools, churches, businesses and private parties are encouraged to participate and help celebrate the holidays with us. All are welcome to help make this a grand community event. We ask only that parade entries have a holiday theme and that your entry be lit with lights.
PARADE DETAILS:
- Holiday Parade is Friday, November 27, 2026 at 6PM. Registrations are due by 11/20/26
- Do not incorporate a Santa in your unit, as the “real one” will be featured along with the Portage Fire Department at the end of the parade.
- No candy throwing is permitted from the vehicles. Please walk along the route to distribute candy.
- The parade will take place entirely on Cook Street (Hwy 33). It will begin at the corner of MacFarlane Road and Cook Street in front of St. Mary Church. It will proceed east down Cook Street to the Market Square parking lot where it will end.
- Lineup will begin at 5:00PM. Parade entrants will be staged by your arrival on MacFarlane Road. Enter the parade staging area from West Pleasant and proceed to the intersection at MacFarlane Road.
- Tree lighting is immediately after the parade at Commerce Plaza.
