SUMMARY:Flag Day Celebration 2012
DESCRIPTION:The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Wisconsin (NSCDA-WI) will again host their annual Flag Day Celebration Picnic and Program on Saturday\, June 16 on the grounds of the Historic Indian Agency House\, which the Wisconsin Dames have proudly owned and operated since 1932.\n\n \n\nThis patriotic event begins with a social hour at 11:30\, an open-air luncheon at noon\, with the program to follow. Lunch will be catered by Portage's Trail's Lounge\, with an all-American menu of pulled pork barbeque sandwiches\, fresh fruit\, and pasta salad\, a choice of lemonade or tea\, and a brownie dessert. The program portion of the day will begin with a ceremonial raising of the United States flag by visiting Girl Scouts\, followed by featured speaker Lee Somerville\, author of Wisconsin Historical Society Press's Vintage Wisconsin Gardens. \n\n \n\nSomerville\, an avid gardener and historian\, will share her research related to Wisconsin gardening. Included in her discussion will be a focus on the transition from the well-stocked farm plots that helped sustain new immigrants on the Wisconsin frontier to the later "leisure-time" gardens of newly transplanted urban dwellers. Somerville's visit is particularly fitting in view of the new Native American garden underway at the Historic Indian Agency House and a related effort to recreate a "Fort garden" at neighboring Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters.\n\n \n\nThe public is invited and welcome\, but please note that there is a $20 per person fee to attend. Reservations are required and can be made at 608-742-6362. \n\n \n\nPlease join us for a day of patriotic camaraderie in a lush and peaceful setting imbued with American history and culture.\n\n \n\nPhoto: Author and Gardening Expert Lee Somerville\, this year's featured guest at June 16th's Historic Indian Agency House Flag Day Celebration.\n\n\n\nClick here for a printable flyer.
